2021 marked the 70th anniversary of the UK’s first ever national part in the Peak District. Vestiges focuses on the unique archaeological heritage of the area, characterised by dramatic barrows which hold the remains of the prehistoric and early medieval dead, as well as the rich and diverse grave goods with which they were buried. Many of these were excavated by the ground-breaking and charismatic antiquarian Thomas Bateman, whose 200th anniversary also fell in 2021.
This beautiful booklet, edited by Melanie Giles and illustrated by Rose Ferraby, features the work of archaeologists and poets, including: James Caruth, Abigail Flint, Melanie Giles, Vona Groake, Rebecca Hurst, John McAuliffe, Richard Skelton, Christine Roseeta Walker, and John Wedgewood Clarke.
